Dear Egg Allergy…

So… my kids have allergies, like many of yours do. Some are more severe than others… We have allergies like Celiac disease where we cannot eat ANY gluten, and then we have other little pesky ones, like eggs that cause eczema and a runny nose, so we know we shouldn’t eat them, yet sometimes we do…

Well, a few months ago, I realized that I had let “sometimes” turn into all the time and my kids were covered in eczema. I was so frustrated and, sadly, we went back to the no eggs policy. Of course I got tired of “gelling flax seeds” and sat down at my desk to do some work (writing work, for you, of course). The following is what came out of my little fingertips…

Dear Egg Allergy,

I’m over you, so I’m ignoring you and treating my children with hydrocortisone.

Yup, you heard me, I’m sick of it, I’m over it – after 7 years of rotational eating, elimination diets, ever-changing allergies and intolerances, I’m moving on and letting you go. I’m tired and I’ll admit it. I have three kids, a 120-year old house, a husband that travels and I am tired of cooking and baking without you.

My gluten-free banana muffins rose like magic again!
So I did it, I went to the grocery and I found you, you local, organic, free range brown beauties. I brought you home and cracked you into a bowl and poof! My gluten-free banana muffins rose like magic again! No longer a crap shoot of whether or not they will rise or taste like a gooey, gummy mess. Just pure perfection. Soft, puffy and perfectly risen. Oh, how I have missed you brown beauties.

Now, let’s be honest. Do I feel bad? Yes, I do… I have cheated on my chemical egg replacer, had an outright affair with my ground flax seed, but you know what? I’m ok with it… a woman needs a little variety in her life.

Now, to the more serious matter, they way you treat my children…and the small gift you always bring to my little Neuners. Like the tooth fairy brings a quarter for a tooth, you bring quarter sized patches of eczema for an egg. They are hard, flaky, quarter-sized kisses that you leave on the elbows and knees of my children when they ingest you. Well, it’s not kind, it’s not loving and it’s something that I really wish you would keep to yourself.

You are kinda like the kid that isn’t a good influence, but who lives next door and keeps your child entertained for hours, so sometimes you relent and let your child play with them.

That’s where we are buddy – we are at playing time. I’m tired and exhausted, and while I am sure that you are going to teach my child another bad word, I am ok with it because right now, I’m going to pour myself a glass of wine and bake the perfect muffin…

Any of you allergy-mamas relate to feeling tired and sick of making everything from scratch? It’s ok – we all do. Or maybe you are a rockstar and you never feel that way? (if this is the case, please comment below so I can learn your uber-amazing secret) – either way, leave a comment below and let me know how you deal with the “allergy fatigue.”

Until next time, keep up the good work mamas! I know you can do it!

XO,
Christina

    Christina!!

I can almost hear you when you give me permission not to be perfect…but to be real!
Thanks for not being afraid to be real!!!

No one is perfect – and the sooner we all own it, the happier we’ll all be. Mamas have got to help eachother out in this day and age. No judgements here!
